The gladiolus is the birth month flower for August — tall sword-shaped spikes bearing multiple large blooms that open from the bottom up over the course of a week, in colors that range from pure white through every shade of pink, coral, and red to deep purple. Named for the Latin word for sword, the gladiolus has a stateliness and vertical authority unlike almost any other flower. In stained glass style it becomes something genuinely magnificent: each large bloom rendered in panels of coral and rose and pale gold, the sword-shaped leaves segmented in deep emerald, the whole spike glowing with the warmth of late summer at its most opulent.

A note on installation: These are decorative art tiles — the design is sublimated onto a coating on the surface, not fired into the ceramic body the way installation tile is.
